Abstract & Figurative Artist

My abstract work springs from an essential state of continual uncertainty – it evolves through an unknown journey of call and response, each painting having a layered history of many changes.
By disciplining myself to have no constrictions in the early phases of each work, I work dynamically until something emerges that takes the painting forward. The interplay of colour, line, texture, and shape then begins to weave together an open-ended, abstract conversation that is felt, rather than explained.
The contrasts, nuances, and discernment of life, are all reflected in my artwork. Some paintings are filled with a vibrant energy, others with quiet order.
My hope is that the viewer is left free to reinterpret the work and find a place for it in their own personal stories.
At other times, I paint using an Abstract Realism approach - sometimes working from black and white Cornish archival photographs, by kind permission of Kresen Kernow and Cornwall Museums. In these paintings I merge historical images with the freedom of abstraction.
My paintings are in mixed media – acrylic paint, pencil, oil pastel and charcoal, usually on wood panels.
I work from my studio on an industrial estate, on the outskirts of Wadebridge, Cornwall.
